Necessity of miniplate removal after orthognathic surgery

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this article was to examine the necessity of miniplate removal following orthognathic surgery. This was accomplished through a retrospective study and an article review.
Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent orthognathic surgery since 2003 at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Chosun University Dental Hospital (Gwangju, Korea) were investigated. Patients¡¯ age, sex, surgery type, and reason for plate removal were examined.
Results: In total, 522 patients were investigated, and 67 patients (13%) had their plates removed. It was revealed that 38 patients (57%) wanted to receive the surgery without any particular reason.
Conclusion: There was no reason for removal of the plates if the patients were not already experiencing complications.
